Start Your Own New Moon Ritual
Have you been wanting to create your own monthly rituals during the New Moon? The New Moon is a great time to set your intentions, get clear on your goals, and make a plan to reach everything you desire.
But you might be nervous about starting a routine or ritual on your own. It doesn’t have to be daunting, it doesn’t have to be perfect, and you don’t need anyone’s permission to get started.
Moon rituals have been done by everyone’s ancestors. It’s not a practice that is own by any culture. I became interested in the moon in 2020 and really dove into it in 2021. I even became a certified Moonologer, through Yasmin Boland’s course. I really wanted to understand it all.
The moon’s guidance and magic is amazing and you deserve to hone it in as you’d like. So here’s a simple New Moon ritual you can start today. And what’s even better is that you can pick and choose what you’d like to do with it.
Materials:
- A journal or paper
- Pen
- A green or brown candle (for grounding and growth)
- Sage, palo santo, or incense (for cleansing)
- A small bowl of water (for purification)
- Crystals like clear quartz or green aventurine (for clarity and growth)
- Essential oils like lavender or peppermint (for clarity and focus)
Steps:
1. Cleansing the Space:
- Begin by cleansing your space with sage, palo santo, or incense. As you do this, set the intention to clear away any stagnant or negative energy, making space for new, positive energy to enter.
2. Grounding Meditation:
- Sit comfortably in your space and take a few deep breaths. Visualize roots growing from the base of your spine down into the earth, anchoring you and connecting you to earth’s energy. Hold your crystals if you have them, and let their energy enhance your grounding.
3. Light the Candle:
- Light your green, brown, or white candle. As you do, focus on what you want to grow in your life during this lunar cycle. Choose intentions that is reflected by the moon, for example if the moon is in Virgo, focus on health, routines, and productivity.
4. Writing Your Intentions:
- Take out your journal or paper and write down your intentions. Be specific and detailed, focusing on practical goals you want to achieve. Think about routines you want to establish, habits you want to form, and any projects that need careful planning.
Example Intentions:
- “My intention this month is to create a daily morning routine that includes meditation and exercise.”
- “My intention this lunar cycle is to organize my workspace to improve productivity and creativity.”
- “I intend to focus on my health by meal planning and incorporating more whole foods into my diet.”
5. Water Purification:
- After writing your intentions, dip your fingers in the bowl of water and sprinkle it over your written intentions. This symbolizes purification and the cleansing of any obstacles that might stand in your way.
6. Visualize Success:
- Close your eyes and visualize yourself successfully achieving each of your intentions. See the steps you take, the challenges you overcome, and the sense of accomplishment you feel. Imagine yourself grounded, focused, and thriving.
7. Closing the Ritual:
- When you feel ready, thank the universe for its support. Snuff out the candle (do not blow it out, as this is believed to disperse your intentions). Close your journal or fold your paper and place it somewhere special where you can revisit it throughout the lunar cycle.
8. Optional Follow-Up:
- Over the next few weeks, revisit your intentions. Adjust them if necessary, and take note of the progress you’re making. Reaching your goals is all about small, consistent steps, so honor the progress you make, no matter how small it may seem.
