Career Planning Midway through the Year

career planning any time of the year manifest your dream career

July marks the midpoint of the year.  We now have 6 months left in this year.

This is your reminder that we still have time to meet your career goals, even if you didn't set any.    The rest of year still has time for incredible opportunities for career growth and abundance.

All you have to do is believe in yourself and your career dreams.

What you can do today…

  1. Complete a career self-analysis
  2. Set a 6-month career goal
  3. Break it down to two 90-day career goals
  4. Find an accountability partner

Complete a Career self-analysis

By completing a self-analysis, you can get a full picture of where you are right now in your career and then you can see what areas you need improvement in your career.  Start a self-analysis by asking yourself these questions:

  • Where am I currently in my career?
  • What accomplishments have I achieved in the last year, three, and five?
  • What are my top 3 skills I have to offer my employer?
  • What are some of my soft and hard skills?
  • What are my areas of improvement in my career and career growth?

After completing a self-analysis, then ask yourself where do you want to be in the next six months. Self reflection is just as important as setting goals.

Set a 6-month Career goal

Take a moment and ask yourself what would make you feel more fulfilled in your career over the next six months.  Decide what type of career growth you would like over the next six months.  There are different types of career goals that help you develop in different ways.  These goals are lateral or sequential, meaning lateral goals help you expand your skill set while sequential goals help you move up the ladder.  Pause here and ask yourself, what is a realistic goal that you want to achieve by the end of 2022?

Below are some examples:

By the end of 2022…

  • Lateral career goals:
    • I will change jobs in my company that help my skillset
    • I will land a job at a different company that values me/pays me more/gives me more flexibility
  • Sequential career goals:
    • I will receive a promotion to team lead/supervisor/manager/director
    • I will complete/enroll in a degree/certification program

Break it down to two 90-day career goals

The next step is to now take this larger 6-month goal into two 90-day career goals that will help you get there.  Often, clients set a long-term career goal and forget to set realistic steps that will help you achieve that goal. You can’t reach a goal without set some actionable steps you can take towards achieving the goal.

Below are some 90 day goals you can set for yourself to reach your 6-month career goal.

In the next 90 days I will…

  • Learn how other departments function
  • Ask for feedback from my supervisor/co-workers/mentor
  • Find a mentor in my field at my company/outside my company
  • Improve my metrics/productivity/communication skills
  • Enhance my network by connecting with others in/outside of my company

Find an accountability partner

The last step is to find someone that will help you stay accountable. After your initial enthusiasm has worn off it is easy to stop taking action towards your goals. Life happens, we all get busy, and the first thing that will go the back burner is intangible goals.  Goals that are not required for your survival and goals that challenge you.

Don’t allow yourself to lose steam in reaching your 6-month goal and set yourself up for success. Do this by finding an accountability partner. This can be a family member, friend, mentor or coworker. Anyone that you trust and respect so that you can know you will be motivated towards reaching the goals you set for yourself.

Be sure to set a schedule with your accountability and make meeting a priority.

Your future self will thank you for taking this time to set a 6-month goal. You got this!
